These hidden gems offer a blend of natural beauty, cultural history, and unique experiences that showcase the quieter side of Aspen. If you'd like assistance planning your visit or need more information on any of these activities, we would love to help!

Catto Center at Toklat - Nestled 11 miles up Castle Creek Valley, the Catto Center at Toklat is a restored wilderness retreat operated by the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). Originally built in the late 1940s by Stuart and Isabel Mace, Toklat—meaning "headwaters" in Inuit—has served as a wilderness lodge, restaurant, art gallery, and family home. After a major renovation completed in late 2024, the center now hosts environmental education programs, art workshops, and community events. The center's rich history and serene setting make it a unique destination for those seeking a deeper connection with nature and Aspen's cultural heritage. The Little Nell, in partnership with Toklat (ACES), is hosting a Ride + Dine Series this summer.

North Star Preserve - Just two miles southeast of downtown Aspen, the 245-acre North Star Nature Preserve offers a tranquil escape into nature. This protected wetland is ideal for stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking along the gentle Roaring Fork River. As you float, keep an eye out for beavers, birds, and even moose in this serene environment. Please note that dogs are not permitted, and visitors are encouraged to stay on their watercraft to protect the delicate ecosystem.

John Denver Sanctuary - This serene outdoor space near Rio Grande Park is a tribute to Aspen’s beloved resident and folk music legend, John Denver. Carved stone lyrics, quiet pathways, wildflowers, and flowing streams create a peaceful environment that feels almost spiritual. Great for reflection or a picnic.

Aspen Meadows - The Aspen Institute’s campus is open to the public and features stunning Bauhaus-inspired architecture, art installations, gardens, and stunning views on 40 acres. Take a self-guided tour to discover Aspen's post-war cultural evolution—or schedule a guided tour.

Snowmass Creek Outfitters - For an authentic Western experience, consider a horseback ride with Snowmass Creek Outfitters. This family-run outfitter offers guided trail rides through the stunning landscapes of the Roaring Fork Valley. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, you'll enjoy traversing scenic trails with views of Mount Sopris and Snowmass Mountain. It's a memorable way to connect with nature and experience the area's rich ranching heritage.
